APPLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Position:
Apprentice Electrician (Inside Wireman) Starting Wage
Approx: $20.88/hr
This is a five year
apprenticeship program. Apprentices work during the day and attend
classes two nights per week. A Journeyman certificate is awarded
upon successful completion.
When:
The Contra Costa County Electrical Apprenticeship Program
is currently not accepting new applications. We will
again open for new applications in January 2013. **
Tests: Applicants
meeting the minimum requirements will be scheduled for the following
steps.
Notification
will be verbal/or by mail. Eligibility will be determined by the
Committee.
1.
The NJATC Aptitude Test (including Algebra and Function and a
Reading Comprehension test) (see:
www.njatc.org website for more information)
2.
Oral interview only if a qualifying score is achieved on the
aptitude test.
Duties:
The
Apprentice Electrician works directly under the supervision of and
assists a qualified Journeyman Electrician in installing or
maintaining a variety of approved wiring methods for distribution of
electrical light, heat, power, radio and signaling utilization
systems in existing or new buildings under construction of
residential, commercial and industrial occupancies; including street
and highway lighting, traffic signal and other outdoor above and
below grade installations.
Minimum Requirements:
Each applicant must:

Be 18
years of age or older, with proof of identification, such as a
drivers’ license or identification card issued by the D.M.V.
(Must have a valid drivers’ license at time of indenture).

Be a
High School graduate or equivalent.

Have
completed one full year (2 semesters) of algebra in High School
or one semester of algebra in College or Adult School with a
passing grade of “C” or better.

Applicants will be required to take and pass a pre-employment
drug/alcohol test.

What to turn in on the
date you make application:

Proof
of identification.

An
official sealed copy of your High
School Transcripts signed by the Registrar’s
Office (No Diplomas) or an official GED
certificate which must include your graduation date and proof of
meeting the algebra requirement. If you did not take algebra in
High School, you must also provide your College or Adult
School Transcripts as proof of meeting the algebra requirement.
The burden of proof is the applicant’s responsibility. (NJATC
online Tech Math Course will meet the algebra requirement) NO
EXCEPTIONS.

APPRENTICESHIP AGREEMENT
Apprenticeship requires a signed agreement between you and
the IBEW-NECA, which insures quality training both on the job and in the
classroom. As an apprentice you literally earn while you learn. As you advance
through your training, you will receive predetermined pay increases.
In signing an apprenticeship agreement, you commit to
participate in classroom related training as well as on the job training.

SOUND AND COMMUNICATION APPRENTICESHIP
APPLICATIONS
Wage & Fringe Benefits: $13.27 to $16.84
per hour to start, depending on location, as per IBEW/NECA
Collective Bargaining Agreement (as
of 12/01/11), with periodic advancement.
Medical & Retirement benefits are provided as per the Collective
Bargaining Agreement, based on hours worked.
Characteristics of the Trade ~ Apprentice
will typically be under the supervision of a Sound and Communication
Installer/Technician at all times. The trade requires physical effort on
the part of the apprentice to do climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting,
use motorized tools, electronic test equipment and work in cramped
quarters. Wiring is frequently color-coded for connecting purposes;
therefore the worker cannot be colorblind. Mechanical ability and finger
dexterity is essential. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, in
new and old construction environments.
Program Scope ~ In order to achieve
Installer status, the 3-year Apprenticeship Agreement requires the
Apprentice to complete 480 classroom hours of Related Supplemental
Instruction, (4 weeks per year), and 4800 hours of On-The-Job training,
through exposure to the following work processes:
Wire and Cable Installation,
Splicing and Termination, Component Installation, Testing,
Commissioning, and Start-up, Maintenance and Service.
Individuals who can show that they meet the conditions listed below,
after making a qualified application, will be afforded an oral interview
by the JATC. Once interviewed, an applicant shall remain active on the
Eligible Applicant List, subject to selection, for a period of two (2)
calendar years from the date of interview.
Minimum Requirements ~ Qualifications for Applicants
1. Must be 17 years of age to apply; 18 years of age at time of
selection and indenture. Valid photo I.D. required (Must have a valid
drivers’ license at time of indenture)
2. Complete an application form, accurately responding to all
questions, including statements indicating you are:
a. Physically and mentally able to safely perform or learn to safely
perform essential functions of the job
b. Able to get to and from work at job sites, as assigned
c. Able and willing to attend all Related Supplemental Instruction,
as required
d. Able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, poles and towers
of various heights
e. Able to crawl and work in cramped spaces such as attics, manholes
and crawlspaces
f. Able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings.
g. Show evidence of successful completion of: one full year (2
semesters) of High School Algebra or one semester of College Elementary
Algebra with a minimum grade of "C" or equivalent or provide evidence of
having successfully completed the NJATC Tech Math Course (available
on-line at
www.njatc.org). Pre-Algebra does not meet this
requirement.
3. Be at least a high school graduate, or have a G.E.D., or have a
two-year Associate Degree or higher
4. Provide official ("sealed") transcript(s) for high school and/or
post high school education and training. G.E.D. records must be
submitted, if applicable. All records and transcripts must be in
English.
5. If a Veteran, submit form DD-214 for possible consideration of
military training and/or experience, if applicable
6. Score "4" or higher, on the electrical trade’s aptitude test
developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research. The
aptitude test includes reading comprehension and basic algebra (see:
www.njatc.org
website for more information).
7. Consent to Substance Abuse Screening.
8. Applications must be completed in-person, by the applicant, and
may not be taken off-site. All required documentation must be provided
by the applicant in order to complete a " qualified"
application
